Types Of Ration Card:
Various kinds of ration cards are available in India. The state government sorts individuals and issues different ration cards as indicated by the classifications. In 2013, The Public Food and Security Act (NFSA) was passed to give a specific amount and quality food to individuals at reasonable costs. The NFSA gives two kinds of ration cards for every one of the states in the country.
Ration Cards Under NFSA, 2013
The National Food and Security Administration (NFSA) supplies food to states in the form of ration cards, and they specify how much and what kind of food will be distributed at fair-price shops. Types of ration cards under NFSA are as follows-
1. Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)
This kind of ration card is given to needy families recognized by the state governments. People who don’t have stable pay are given this card. Jobless individuals, ladies, and old matured individuals fall under this classification. These cardholders are qualified to get 35kg of food grains each month per family. They get foodgrains at the sponsored cost of Rs.3 for rice, Rs.2 for wheat, and Rs.1 for coarse grains.
2. Priority Household (PHH)
The families not covered under AAY go under the PHH. The state governments recognize the needy families under the Designated Public Conveyance Framework (TPDS) as indicated by their selective, comprehensive rules. The PHH cardholders get 5kg of food grains per individual each month. Foodgrains are at the sponsored cost of Rs.3 for rice, Rs.2 for wheat, and Rs.1 for coarse grains for these cardholders.
Ration Cards Under TPDS
As a result of the implementation of NFSA, state governments issued ration cards under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS). The states have since issued ration cards under the NFSA system (which are mentioned above). However, the states which have yet to implement this system still follow the old TPDS systems. Ration cards under TDPS are as follows-
1. Below Poverty Line (BPL)
State governments determine the BPL cards for families who are below the poverty line while the subsidized end retail price for specific quantities of wheat, rice, sugar, and other items varies from state to state. BPL cards are provided to families who fall below the state-defined poverty line. BPL families receive up to 20kg of food grains per family per month at 50% of the economic cost.
2. Above Poverty Line (APL)
Families that have this card are the ones who are living above the poverty line as specified by the state government. APL families receive 10kg to 20kg food grains per family per month at 100% of the economic cost. Each state government fixes a subsidized retail rate for rice, wheat, sugar, and kerosene oil for a certain quantity.
3. Annapoorna Yojana (AY)
AY ration cards are given to the elderly who are poor and over 65 years old. They receive 10 kg of food grains every month under this card State governments assign these cards to the elderly who meet the scheme’s guidelines.
